"THUNDER CREEK"
THUNDER CREEK AT THE AMELIA FAMILY CAMP GROUNDS FOR THE AMELIA BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL

Thunder Creek
Traditional and Gospel Bluegrass
Success for Thunder Creek has been in leaps and bounds since the formation of the group in November
of 2003. The group consists of six members five original members of the six still remain, those being
David Joyner (guitar & lead, baritone & bass vocals), Jeff Collins (fiddle & lead, tenor & baritone
vocals), Delk Batten (guitar & lead & baritone vocals), Troy Scarborough (banjo & lead, tenor &
baritone vocals) and Bobby Scarborough (bass). The sixth member is new to the group, Lester Potter
(mandolin). All the members have full time day jobs except for Bobby who is retired.
Since the conception of the band the one thing that sets Thunder Creek apart from other groups is the
tight harmonies. When four of those voices come together…watch out. It would be hard put to match
their a cappella renditions of many songs. It is easy to hear why the human voice is considered the purest
of instruments.
The instrumentation is none too slack either. Jeff Collins won first place for his fiddle playing and Troy
Scarborough won second place for his banjo playing in the 2005 Virginia Folk Music Association. The
Band won second place overall in 2005 Virginia Folk Music Association. This is the only competition
sanctioned by the Governor of Virginia.
Along with the instrumentation and vocals, a couple of band members have written and produced original
songs. David Joyner wrote “Burning Leaves” which is on their first recording Roaring Run and George
Atkins (former band member) wrote “It Sounds like a Bluegrass Song to Me” also on their first recording
Roaring Run. Since that first recording, Thunder Creek has recorded and produced two more albums,
Back to Our Roots, a gospel recording and their latest recording By Request, a mixture of bluegrass,
country and gospel. Back to Our Roots was reviewed by BLUEGRASS UNLIMITED, December 2007
issue. Their ending comment was “….Back To Our Roots is regional bluegrass gospel at its finest and
sure to be a blessing to the friends and followers of Thunder Creek.” To date Thunder Creek has sold
over 5000 CDs collectively since the first recording was released in 2005.
The group started out performing in their local area of Southampton County, Virginia at churches,
Ruritan clubs, benefit fund raisers, car shows and businesses. After they obtained a solid fan base locally
they then branched out to include festivals, county fairs, state parks and regional concerts opening for
well known artists such as Tony Rice and The Marshall Tucker Band. Over 42 radio stations at present
in Virginia, North Carolina and West Virginia are playing Thunder Creek recordings on a consistent
basis. Currently, because of the recent review of Thunder Creek’s gospel recording, radio stations all
over the United States are contacting the group for their CDs to be aired. Through cdbaby.com, CD
sales and digital downloads of Thunder Creek recordings have reached Canada, Australia, Spain, France
and England as well as across the United States. This is extremely exciting and rewarding that so many
people are enjoying their music.
Thunder Creek gives all the glory to our Lord Jesus Christ for their success, for without Him we would
be nothing. They also appreciate and thank all the family, friends and Thunder Creek fans who have
supported and encouraged them over the last four years. The faithfulness of these people and the Lord
has motivated Thunder Creek to strive to bring pleasure and the Word through song to those who
otherwise would not grace the door of a church. For this we are eternally grateful.
